Addis ababa: Canada’s newly appointed Ambassador to Ethiopia, Nicolas Simard, has pledged to enhance economic cooperation between the two nations, focusing on key sectors such as aerospace, renewable energy, mining, and education. Speaking to Ethiopian News Agency (ENA), Ambassador Simard emphasized the importance of these sectors in strengthening economic relations.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, Ambassador Simard presented his credentials to President Taye Atske Sellasie and engaged in a comprehensive discussion on peace, security, and economic relations. He expressed the need for collaboration in supporting vital sectors to bolster economic ties.
The presentation of credentials marked the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and Ethiopia. Ambassador Simard highlighted Ethiopia’s significance as Canada’s second-largest partner globally in terms of development assistance, following Ukraine, and the largest in Africa, with an annual aid of approximately 195 million dollars.
Ambassador Simard underscored the link between economic development and regional stability, asserting that enhanced economic cooperation requires peace and security. He shared his extensive African experience, having served as an ambassador in Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Mali, which he believes will aid in fostering stronger relations with Ethiopia.
He also mentioned Canada’s renewed focus on Africa through a comprehensive strategy launched earlier this year, aimed at expanding Canada’s presence and investment in Africa’s economic, peace, and security sectors. Ambassador Simard expressed optimism about expanding bilateral relations beyond traditional development cooperation into new economic fields.
