Construction of Kagumoini Modern Market in Murang’a Kicks Off

Murang'a: The State Department for Housing has handed over the site for construction of a modern market at Kagumoini shopping centre in Mathioya Sub-County, Murang'a. The County Director of Housing, Ms. Laureen Wasungu, stated that the contractor has a 14-day period to mobilize equipment and resources prior to starting construction.

According to Kenya News Agency, Ms. Wasungu, speaking at the site handover ceremony and a public participation event, announced that the construction of the Sh.76.5 million market is expected to take six months. She also highlighted the employment opportunities that would be available to local residents, particularly the youth, during the construction phase.

The new market is designed to accommodate approximately 300 traders, which is anticipated to significantly boost economic activities in the area. Wasungu remarked that the market is set to transform Kagumoini by revitalizing the local economy and providing a much-needed trading hub.

Ms. Wasungu reassured residents that Dancom Construction Ltd, the contractor for the project, has been directed to prioritize hiring local workers. This decision was well-received by the community, who view the project as a means to enhance both trade and agriculture in the area.

Local resident Daniel Njuguna expressed support for the project, noting that it will allow farmers to sell their produce without needing to travel to distant markets, such as the one in Kiriaini. Njuguna also suggested that a market committee be formed to manage stall distribution upon the market's completion.

Lucy Wanjiku, another resident, emphasized the importance of completing the market within the scheduled timeline to ensure the project's value to the community. In addition to trading stalls, the market will feature amenities such as cold and dry rooms, mothers' rooms, an ICT hub, a social hall, a hotel, and an ablution block.

Hezron Mbuthia, Operations Manager for Dancom Construction Ltd, assured residents that a majority of the workforce will be sourced locally, with a focus on hiring individuals who are sober and safety-conscious.

Once completed, Kagumoini market will be the 14th market constructed in Murang'a County, with an overall goal of establishing 27 markets throughout the county.
