County Approves Motion To Sponsor Football Teams

Nyeri County Assembly has approved a motion that seeks to compel the Executive to establish a Sports Development Programme to fund county league teams that will facilitate the County League Teams with funds for registration and match participation fees. While moving the motion, Nominated MCA Kelvin Kariithi was concerned that football teams are unable to raise adequate money for registration, match participation fees, and transport in order to participate in games. Kariithi noted that sponsoring these teams will not only harness and nurture talents but also provide a form of employment and recreation. He added that the sports industry offers employment to the youth, thereby promoting economic growth and lessening their engagement in socially destructive activities such as alcohol and substance abuse and crime, among others. The mover appreciated the efforts by the County Government in facilitating teams with uniforms and sports equipment through the Ward Specific programme. He noted the existence of organised football clubs in Nyeri County, such as Marafiki FC, Rware FC, Homeboiz FC, Othaya Green Santos, and Kamakwa Green Eagles, among others, that have been participating in the Football Kenya Federation Leagues. He urged the Sports Department to consider funding transport logistics for the football teams by providing transport funds or by using the County Sports Van to ferry the team players to their respective games’ venues. Supporting the motion, the Members underscored the fact that sports is a devolved function as provided by Part 2 of the Fourth Schedule of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010. They called upon the executive to play an active role in supporting the youth, adding that through sports, the youth showcase their abilities and skills as well as share experiences. In a sitting chaired by the Deputy Speaker and Ruring’u Ward MCA Samuel Kariuki, the Members resolved that the CEC considers sourcing for other local investors who may partner with the County Government or the teams directly for sponsorship purposes, among others.
