Department Heads Asked To Attend Govt Meetings

Laikipia County Commissioner Mr. Joseph Kanyiri has asked department heads in the county to take a keen interest in meetings that address government projects, programmes, and policies.

Kanyiri, who was chairing the inaugural meeting of the County Implementation Coordination and Management Committee in Nanyuki town on Friday, warned that departmental heads who fail to attend the meetings would be called upon to explain why they failed to attend or face disciplinary action.

‘As departmental heads, you are expected to attend these monthly meetings without fail or lateness so that you can give a detailed report of government projects under your department as well as be part of the monitoring and evaluation team that will regularly visit to access the progress of ongoing projects,’ Kanyiri said.

The CC further said that departmental heads must at all times attend the meetings and desist from delegating the role to junior officers under them since their role in the forums was decision-making at county levels and giving guidance on what projects the government should prioritise at any given time.

‘This committee is mandated to find solutions to ongoing government projects and ensure their full implementation and timely completion,’ Kanyiri said.

The Government Delivery Unit Director in Charge of the South Rift Region, Mr. John Nderitu, who was also present, took the members through the guidelines on the coordination and implementation of national government policies, programmes, and projects.

‘These guidelines outline a clear and concise framework for coordination and supervision of government business, ensuring that all entities work together seamlessly to achieve our national goals and objectives,’ Nderitu said.

He urged the county heads to treat the committee with the seriousness it deserved since all deliberations discussed therein were escalated to the office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary, where the Government Delivery Unit is domiciled, before onward transmission to the Office of the President.

Among the guidelines outlined in the coordination framework are: updating the committee on ongoing projects; monitoring and evaluating the same projects; advising the government on priority development needs in the counties; and facilitating public participation based on feedback from the beneficiary communities, among others.

The Kenya Kwanza manifesto has outlined six key pillars anchored on the bottom-up economic model that seeks to transform the country.

On his nationwide campaign tours last year, the President anchored his manifesto on the pillars of an improved healthcare system, education reforms, improved social welfare, a revival of the agriculture sector to boost food security, manufacturing through improving micro and small enterprises, and governance.
