Teso South: Teso South Member of Parliament, Mary Emase, has issued a stern warning to local sub-county police chiefs regarding the phenomenon of disco-matanga, which has been identified as a leading cause of teenage pregnancies in the region. Emase emphasized the need to curb early marriages and prevent the rampant issue of teenage pregnancies.

According to Kenya News Agency, while speaking at Simba Chai market during the NG-CDF Public participation on development plans, Emase urged the Officer Commanding Police Divisions in Amukura and Adungosi to be vigilant and ensure the arrest of all unlicensed DJs promoting disco-matanga in the area. She further cautioned chiefs who permit such activities within their jurisdictions, stating that they will be held accountable.

Emase likened the fight against disco-matanga to the battle against illicit brews, emphasizing the risk of losing a generation if the issue is not addressed with urgency. Her comments followed a plea from local women, led by Joyce Epale, who req
uested action against the vice and the presence of chang’aa dens near learning institutions.

Residents of Teso South have expressed their concerns about the resurgence of disco-matanga, calling for its criminalization to foster the area’s development and enhance educational growth. According to Epale, young men are spending nights dancing, smoking bhang, and harassing passersby for money under the pretense of using it to transport deceased bodies to the village.

Epale also lamented the loud music played from 6 PM to 5 AM, which disrupts the community. She highlighted the need for peace and quiet, especially for those with small children and those needing rest before work. The concern arises as learners prepare for a lengthy two-month break during the December holidays.
