Ethiopian Securities Exchange Ready to Serve Foreign Investors

Addis Ababa: The Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESE) announced that it has made sufficient preparations to serve foreign investors who participate in the securities exchange market.

The ESE, a joint venture between the private and public sectors, aims to be an alternative source of finance for the government and the private sector and create a streamlined trading system.

Ethiopian Securities Exchange senior legal expert, Habtamu Hailemeskel said the market would become a compelling alternative source of finance for both the government and the private sector.

He noted that the ESE provides an avenue for public enterprises to reduce their dependance on traditional loans they obtain from financial institutions only and directly mobilize funds from the public and investors.

According to the expert, foreign investors can participate in the Ethiopian market by acting as service providers within the capital market sector or by directly investing in debt securities and shares, in accordance with the country’s inv
estment laws.

Habtamu highlighted the crucial role of foreign investor’s participation in driving knowledge transfer, empowering the workforce, and addressing Ethiopia’s foreign currency shortage.

He also noted that it will also bolster the country’s macroeconomic reform efforts and attract foreign investment.

The legal expert further said that the ESE has taken proactive steps to accommodate investors interested in participating in the capital market and completed its preparations to receive such institutions.
