France and Kenya Forge Partnership to Train Coaches in Sports Development.


Iten: The French ambassador to Kenya, Arnaud Suquet, presided over the signing of a deal between Iten town, renowned as the home of athletic champions, and Miramas city in France. This agreement, signed on Saturday, aims to train coaches from Elgeyo Marakwet County in France, marking a significant step in enhancing sports training and development.

According to Kenya News Agency, the ambassador highlighted that the initiative seeks to promote gender equality in sports by training an equal number of male and female athletes. A special emphasis will be placed on combating gender-based violence through this program. In addition, the partnership will address the development of sports medicine, ensuring that Kenyan athletes maintain their health while honing their talents.

Elgeyo Marakwet County Governor, Wisley Rotich, expressed his appreciation for the partnership, noting that while the county has produced leading athletes, a lack of qualified coaches has hindered their performance in international competitions
. The training program, set to commence this month, will continue until December 2025, offering training sessions in both Kenya and France. Trained coaches will return to Kenya to train others, including primary and secondary school teachers, who play a crucial role in nurturing young talent.

Governor Rotich also mentioned that the partnership would create career opportunities for Kenyan athletes and coaches who show potential in coaching. Successful coaches will have the chance to further their training and professional careers. The ambassador was joined by three mayors from France, including Miramas City Mayor Frederick Vigouroux, underscoring the importance of this international collaboration.
