Nairobi: Record Premier League champions, Gor Mahia, suffered a 0-1 defeat to Bidco United in their debut in the 2025/26 FKF Sportpesa League at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, Nairobi, on Sunday. Bidco United’s Newton Ochieng secured the win with an 88th-minute penalty, resulting from a clumsy foul inside the box.
According to Kenya News Agency, Bidco United’s strategy paid off as they held firm against Gor Mahia’s late push, despite the latter’s possession advantage. The first half ended goalless, with Bidco United effectively restricting Gor Mahia’s scoring opportunities.
Bidco United Head Coach Anthony Akhulia expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, highlighting their preparation and ability to capitalize on Gor Mahia’s forward speed. He praised the new, youthful players and emphasized their role in maintaining the team’s league status, noting the team’s overhaul and average age of 24.
Gor Mahia Coach, Charles Akonnor, described the game’s outcome as unfortunate, acknowledging the team’s dominance in possession and chance creation but inability to score. He pointed out the need for improvement in converting chances into goals and vowed to enhance performance in upcoming matches.
Meanwhile, tensions flared outside the stadium as police clashed with Gor Mahia’s fans before kickoff. The situation, which involved the use of teargas, was eventually brought under control, allowing fans to enter the stadium under police supervision.
