Interior CS Assures Security at the Busia Border

Busia: The Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen, has assured residents of Busia on the government’s commitment to ensure security within the border county. Speaking during a courtesy call at the Busia County Commissioner’s office, Murkomen emphasized that security agencies are on high alert to prevent illegal goods from entering the country.

According to Kenya News Agency, the Cabinet Secretary highlighted the ongoing challenge of smuggling contraband goods, especially illicit brews and ethanol, into the local community through porous borders. He noted that significant operations have been conducted in the county, leading to the confiscation of about 8,000 liters of ethanol, with those involved already facing court proceedings.

Murkomen also addressed concerns about the potential emergence of criminal groups as the country approaches elections. He noted that security forces have successfully dealt with young individuals involved in criminal activities, including robbery with violence. He urged politicians to ensure that their activities do not facilitate the formation of such groups, which are often mobilized to provide security during meetings but subsequently terrorize the public.

Furthermore, the CS mentioned ongoing cooperation with the Ugandan government to address issues related to fishing in Lake Victoria. Steps have been taken to sensitize fishermen on appropriate fishing practices, including the use of licensed nets. Murkomen assured that efforts are underway to increase the presence of coast guards and improve relations with Uganda.

Addressing environmental concerns, Murkomen assured residents of Alupe that both Kenyan and Ugandan governments are working to resolve issues related to gold mining activities at the border, particularly pollution of the river in the Alupe area. He expressed confidence in harmonizing legal frameworks across East African countries to ensure consistency in law enforcement.

Murkomen also called on citizens to remain vigilant against religious cults, referencing issues faced in Kwabinzaro. He urged the public to report misleading cult activities to authorities to prevent victimization.

In addition, Murkomen launched a modern machine capable of producing National Identity cards at Huduma Centre, clarifying that vetting for applicants should not be conducted nationwide. He later participated in a Jukua la Usalama meeting at Busia Agricultural Training Centre, engaging with the National Government Security team and the public.
