Busia: Meat traders in Busia are set to benefit significantly from the Kenya Livestock Commercialization Project (KeLCoP), which is focused on enhancing market facilities and the slaughterhouse across the county to help livestock traders maximize their profits.
According to Kenya News Agency, the project is expected to increase the income of over 110,000 households in Kenya who depend on livestock for their livelihood, as stated by Dr. Michael Kipyegon, the livestock marketing specialist for KeLCoP.
Dr. Kipyegon shared these insights after visiting the Busia Municipality slaughterhouse and the proposed Funyula Livestock Market. He highlighted plans to upgrade the Busia Municipality slaughterhouse and livestock sale yards in several markets within the county, including the Funyula Market. To ensure effective management of livestock sale yards in Busia County, Dr. Kipyegon mentioned that KeLCoP will support the Busia County government in finalizing the Sale Yard Bill, which aims to manage the market effectiv
ely and enhance the sale of livestock and meat products, thereby increasing the income of Busia residents.
Engineer Stephen Melly from the State Department for Public Works echoed Dr. Kipyegon’s sentiments, stating that they are closely working with KeLCoP to provide technical support in the livestock development market. This includes identifying, establishing, designing, and facilitating the construction of livestock markets.
The Busia County Director-In-Charge of Livestock Production, Mr. David Mukabane, indicated that the KeLCoP team has mapped out areas needing upgrades, particularly the Busia Slaughterhouse. He expressed optimism that the facility will effectively serve the county’s people upon completion. Mr. Mukabane also mentioned that, besides the Funyula Livestock Market, other livestock markets in Busia County, such as those in Elugulu ward in Butula and Angurai in Teso North sub-counties, will be improved.
