The Department of Social Services, Nyeri County, in partnership with a local alumni group, Kiandu Transformation Network (KTN), equipped Kiandu Primary School Library with books on Monday during a book drive function held at the school grounds.
The book drive was geared towards promotion and access to knowledge, educational opportunities, encouraging reading habits, literacy improvement, and fostering a sense of community responsibility, environmental sustainability, and personal development.
The alumni noted with a lot of concern that Tetu is the only constituency in Nyeri County without a public library.
During the event, the community was sensitised on the importance of education, hard work, commitment, community support, and teamwork for the empowerment of its people.
They noted that libraries play an essential role in local communities by providing access to information and resources, supporting literacy and education, promoting lifelong learning, promoting environmental conservation, and serving as a community gathering space.
The donation of reading materials, computers, and other resources will definitely improve the performance, innovation, and quality of education.
Speaking on the occasion, Director of Social Services Monicah Thumbi emphasised the need for schools to enrol in institutional membership with the libraries in the county since it provides institutions with enhanced access to resources, expert support, networking opportunities, and various other advantages that contribute to their research, knowledge, and professional development goals.
