Elected leaders in Murang’a have been challenged to come up with various programmes that will empower young people and save them from the menace of drug abuse and alcoholism.

A local professional and a philanthropist Dr. Kamau Wairuri has observed that some of the elected leaders are currently focusing on 2027 politics instead of establishing and implementing various projects to support especially the jobless youths.

On Tuesday speaking at General Kago stadium in Kangema, Wairuri said a big number of unemployed young people due to distress and lack of hope have indulged into alcoholism and drug abuse.

‘Our leaders should not only focus on encouraging youths to avoid drugs and other substance abuse but also provide them with alternative activities that will make them earn money. Things like sports and creative arts are some of the alternatives which can be established to support our young people,’ said Kamau.

He continued ‘There is time for politics but at this time our leaders should focus on development
and policies that will make the cost of living bearable to the majority of mwananchi.’

Kamau said many of the youth despite having potential in various fields were wallowing in alcoholism and drugs thus the need for their rescue and support from various quarters.

‘It is a testimony that hundreds of youth are wallowing in poverty due to lack of guidance and source of income. Guidance and mentorship will help our young people out of the mess and be productive,’ he added.

Kamau spoke during finals of the Kangema Soccer Tournament which was sponsored by his foundation.

In the soccer tournament that brought together eight teams, it was observed some of the local players are talented, thus the need to be exposed to gain more experience and attain self-confidence.

Kamau said he will work towards helping the youth to realize their potential to save them from indulging into anti-social behaviours.

‘Dr Kamau is among the few professionals who is sponsoring the youth and engaging them directly thus discouraging them from indulging in alcoholism,’ said Kamori.

Jane Waithera, from Iyego on her part noted that there was a need for effective engagement between the professionals and youth.

‘Youth require mentorship as there are many in the villages who cannot make better decisions about their lives,’ said Waithera.

In the finals, Kangema Wazee FC beat rival Kangema United FC 5-4 goals and received awards including cash prizes of various amounts. Kanorero FC emerged third and Nyakahura FC clinched position four.

Other teams that participated in the tournament that started on September 29 include Colorado FC, Kahiti FC, Kiairathe FC and Rocks FC. All the teams received sports kits from Kamau’s foundation.
