Machakos, Kenya – Machakos County has heightened its alertness due to concerns over a potential cholera outbreak, following several cases reported in other regions of the country amidst the ongoing El Niño rains.

According to Kenya News Agency, who addressed the press in his office on Wednesday, the residents of Machakos are advised to maintain high standards of hygiene to avert any outbreak of the disease. He disclosed that a multi-sectoral team has been established to assess and monitor the situation for any signs of cholera across the county.

“The team will assist in containing the spread of the disease in the event of an outbreak. We are prepared and committed to addressing any cholera-related challenges,” Mwangangi stated.

In an immediate response, the deputy governor mandated the repair of all leaking raw sewage systems in Machakos town within a 24-hour timeframe to prevent the spread of cholera.

During the same briefing, County Secretary Dr. Muya Ndambuki announced that all level four hospitals in the county are on standby to manage any instances of cholera. Dr. Ndambuki confirmed that each of these facilities has reserved at least five beds for the treatment of cholera patients, should an outbreak occur.

Also present at the briefing was the County Executive Committee Member (ECM) for Health, Dr. Daniel Yumbya, who called on residents, especially those running food businesses, to adhere to stringent hygiene practices. He emphasized the importance of regular handwashing and ensuring access to safe drinking water as preventive measures against cholera.

Dr. Yumbya noted that while no cases have been reported in Machakos so far, the county remains vigilant and ready to respond to any developments. This announcement comes in the wake of a previous cholera outbreak in Machakos on March 6, which resulted in six fatalities and 45 individuals receiving treatment and subsequent discharge.
