Mombasa Combined Boxing Team Set for East Africa Championships.

Mombasa: The Mombasa Combined boxing team is poised to compete in the East African club championships, vying for prestigious regional titles. Speaking in Mombasa Town as the team departed for Tanga, Tanzania, Head Coach Peter Onyango expressed confidence in the team’s preparedness, citing the ample time they have had to train and fully equip the boxers for the tournament.

According to Kenya News Agency, Onyango highlighted that sixteen Kenyan boxers will participate in the four-day competition, which will also feature participants from South Africa and Malawi. He expressed optimism about the team’s prospects, stating, “We expect to do exceptionally well in the competitions in Tanga. My boxers have been in camp training for the games, and I have confidence they will give good performances and clinch medals for the country.”

Onyango also noted the inclusion of junior segments in this year’s edition, aiming to nurture young and inexperienced boxers. This marks the third appearance of the Mombasa Combined team
in the championships, having secured two gold medals in the previous editions. The Head Coach expressed confidence in the experienced boxers’ ability to deliver victory and secure gold medals once again. “In the last two editions, our experienced fighters have successfully won two gold medals, which we intend to defend and retain the bragging rights,” he added.

Team Captain Kombo Mwinyi called on boxing fans across the country to support the team, anticipating positive results from the competition in Tanga. He emphasized the importance of thorough preparation for an international competition of this magnitude, crediting the team’s technical trainers for their efforts. “We have been tested and proven in the last two championships, having bagged two gold medals. This gives us an edge over other teams because of the experience we possess,” Mwinyi remarked.
