More Affordable Housing Units Planned for Gichugu College

Gichugu: Gichugu Technical and Vocational College (TVC) in Kirinyaga is set to benefit from an affordable housing program with the construction of 580 units within the institution soon to commence. The institution, located less than a kilometer from Mount Kenya Forest, has relied heavily on private hostel owners for student accommodation.

According to Kenya News Agency, Gichugu TVC principal Kimemia stated that the project will significantly boost student intake, as the current student population is nearly 700. He expressed gratitude towards the government and community for their support, highlighting that the affordable housing initiative will largely address accommodation challenges. Kimemia remarked, “Securing 580 housing units is no small achievement with our current student population at 690, and with the momentum we have we are targeting to reach 2,000 students by the end of next year. Once this housing project is completed it will ensure our students have access to decent accommodation.”

He further noted that the institution’s location has posed accommodation challenges, expressing appreciation for locals who have constructed small houses for students. The development is anticipated to stimulate local businesses, creating a supportive ecosystem around the institution.

Additionally, he acknowledged a significant shift in youth mindset, noting that many young people are now embracing technical and vocational education. Citing data from KUCCPS, he mentioned that nearly 42,000 young people have opted for technical colleges over universities.

Area MP Githinji Gichimu expressed his commitment to advocating for more infrastructure for the TVC. The legislator, who accompanied the contractor commencing the construction of affordable housing for students, pointed out that students will gain practical training in key technical areas such as building, plumbing, and welding during the construction.

“As the housing project progresses, students will gain practical skills they can use to build homes for themselves and others. By the time the houses are complete, the students will have both the technical knowledge and the practical experience to find employment or even start their own businesses in the construction sector,” Gichimu said.

Furthermore, the development is expected to have a positive impact on the surrounding community. Local residents are already constructing more houses to accommodate the anticipated influx of students and staff.

Purity Nyaga, a student at the institution, noted that the college has faced serious accommodation challenges. Those seeking shelter outside encounter difficulties, especially regarding security. “Having access to affordable housing within the institution will make a huge difference, offering a safer, more stable environment to live in and focus on studies,” Ms. Nyaga said.
