National Heritage Week brings Namibians together: Theofelus

Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Technology (MICT), Emma Theofelus, stated on Wednesday that the aim of celebrating National Heritage Week is to unite all Namibians in sharing information about the country’s history, heritage and culture.

The minister made these remarks during the celebration of Namibian Heritage Week, which carries the theme ‘Heritage and Culture: A Rock-Solid Foundation in Namibian Sign Language (NSL).’

In a statement issued to Nampa by the MICT on Wednesday, Theofelus emphasised that Heritage Week also promotes the preservation and protection of all cultural heritage in Namibia, regardless of Namibia’s religious or ethnic identity.

‘This year’s theme is fitting with our national motto of ‘One Namibia, One Nation,’ which binds us together and enables us, as Namibians, to communicate deeply and uniquely and to express ourselves to the outside world, irrespective of our diverse culture, heritage and tradition,’ the deputy minister said.

Furthermore, preserving and developing the national heritage is of great importance because it serves as the foundation for Namibia’s education, tourism, agriculture, recreation, innovation, and business in general. It is crucial for all citizens to acknowledge and cherish our diverse and rich culture, preserving it for posterity, added Theofelus.

‘It is our responsibility to celebrate the diversity of our heritage and ensure that it remains a source of strength and unity for our nation. Celebrating diversity promotes inclusivity, and this year’s theme aligns with the vision of inclusivity as articulated by President Hage Geingob, who has stated that ‘inclusivity spells peace and harmony,” she said.
