President Hage Geingob left for New York on Thursday to attend the 78th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, which starts Sunday.
Presidential Affairs Minister, Christine ||Hoebes, who bid the president farewell at the Hosea Kutako International Airport, told Nampa the Head of State will be quite active on the sidelines of the UN summit.
“It is a diplomatic gathering where about 170 Heads of State and Government convene to discuss issues of security, issues of governance, and so forth,” ||Hoebes said.
She said that President Geingob is expected to deliver his main statement on Wednesday.
“After that, there are many side events in which he is going to take part. One of those will be a reception by the host, US President Joe Biden, that is taking place on Tuesday. Apart from that, the president is going to take part in the Corporate Council of Africa, a round table that will assess the critical minerals and energy transition in Africa,” she said.
The platform provides an opportunity for Namibia to showcase its position as one of the leading destinations for mining investments and green solutions, which Namibia advances through the development of a green hydrogen industry.
On Monday, Geingob will participate in the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, where he will deliver a statement on the theme ‘Scaling up actions on key transitions to accelerate SDG progress’.
According to ||Hoebes, several Heads of State and Governments have requested to meet with the Namibian leader, including from Germany, Belgium, Hungary and South Korea.
