The school administration of Petercrest Academy in Eldoret held a celebration following the school’s exemplary performance in its first Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) exam for grade 6 learners.

The school registered a Mean grade of A plain of 88.6 points according to the results issued by the Ministry of Education on the 19th of January 2024. Addressing the press during the thanksgiving event at Petercrest Academy, Kapsoya, Eldoret, the Principal Dr. Charles Odero praised the school for its exemplary results in their first national examination, with the top three candidates scoring 41 out of 44 points.

He further pointed out that Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) is designed in such a way that it resembles the university system. Therefore 40% is done at school which includes recorded practical while 60% is done nationally.

‘We are here to celebrate our results. All our candidates got a mean grade of A. Our School is purely CBC and we are proud to offer the CBC curriculum. We are offerin
g special areas that are covered in CBC like Kiswahili and Sign Language, which are taught to our students right from Grade one to Grade eight,’ he said.

Dr. Odero stated that the school has advanced ICT facilities, including computer labs and science labs, which enable it to provide learners with practical skills in line with the current education system.

He commended the government for coming up with the Competency Based Curriculum which he said is intended to achieve competence in every learning area for the students. He added that this had been realised through the integration of ICT in learning which the school too fully embraces by having a well-equipped lab with over 50 computers and other accessories.

Noting that the CBC curriculum is expensive, the principal indicated that they had heavily invested in efficient learning materials for effective learning. He added that they have gone a step further to allow public schools which lack these amenities to be able to use their labs.

Dr. Odero indicated
that the needy and bright students in the institution benefit from scholarships from the school management.

He further clarified that CBC promotes community learning by encouraging students to engage in positive activities like environmental cleaning and visiting orphanages, ensuring holistic education according to Ministry of Education requirements.

He decried various challenges that the curriculum experiences in terms of implementation like lack of enough teachers, print materials and sufficient classes to accommodate students.

In his remarks, The Executive Director, Peter Anasi, lauded the performance as they were able to register exceptional results in their first national exam. He said that the school accommodates students from play groups, Grade one to Grade seven and the junior secondary.

The school’s Finance Director Edna Anasi, noted that they will continue to work in line with the Ministry of Education to provide quality education for their learners even as they prepare this year’s candidates fo
r the National Examinations.

KATIMA MULILO: The MTC-Kilimanjaro Boxing Club launched a school boxing development programme in Katima Mulilo on Monday, which will be active in seven regions across the country.

Learners at Namalubi Combined School and Bukalo Primary School were introduced to the fundamentals of boxing on the first day of the programme, which is expected to visit more schools before progressing to Kavango West, Kavango East, and the remaining regions.

Club founder Joseph Benhard explained that the programme’s objective is to bring boxing to remote parts of the country while scouting for new talent.

‘Our ultimate goal is to scout raw talent with the introduction of the sport in these remote areas,’ he said.

Benhard said the programme will conclude in August, culminating in a special event hosted in the Oshana Region with selected learners from all seven regions participating.

Mutimani Albius Alfes, the principal of Namalubi school, expressed gratitude and highlighted the significance of sport. He said boxing can create
opportunities for learners.

‘Boxing is one of the sports that can create opportunities for the learners as not all of them will make it in their education, and when the opportunity comes, they can make a living through boxing,’ he remarked.

Alfes urged the club to not just showcase their offerings but to actively engage in training learners from a young age, fostering talent development.

Moowa Richard, a teacher at Bukalo Primary School, shared the sentiment that boxing is a valuable sport, not only locally, but also internationally. He however said it is neglected in rural areas and emphasised the need for a diverse range of sports selections in these areas.

Richard said learners in rural areas often only have access to football and netball, making the boxing programme a significant opportunity for them.
