World Bank Pledges Support to Modernize Ethiopia’s Tax Administration

The World Bank expressed support for Ethiopia’s effort towards modernizing the tax administration, according to the Ministry of Revenues.

The Ministry of Revenues and high-level delegation of the World Bank held a meeting on a project implemented under the framework of “Advancing Ethiopia’s Tax Administration to Provide Cost-Effective and Efficient Services”.

The Ministry indicated that the project will help increase the ratio of Ethiopia’s tax revenue with GDP.

Generating reform ideas in pursuant to Ethiopia’s tax policy, expediting efforts to build an efficient, modern and accessible tax administration system through modern technology, and steps to improve the quality standards of services provided to taxpayers are included in the project, it was learned.

Minister of Revenues Aynalem Nigusie said the project should be applied regularly to the tax collection organizations at all regional levels.

She stressed that the objectives of the project should be in line with 10-year national development plan and mid-term (2016-2018 E.C) development and investment plan.

Furthermore, the minister urged for the inclusion of the encouraging efforts on modernizing the tax administration and efforts of other development partners to minimize resource duplication.

The Ministry of Revenues and the World Bank will organize series of workshops that will build the capacity of pertinent professionals, it was indicated.

World Bank Group President, Ajay Banga during his visit to Ethiopia last August commended Ethiopia’s reform efforts and reiterated the World Bank’s support for accelerated economic growth.
